Punch Blanks vs Finished Punches: When to Buy Blanks

You Should Buy Blanks If:

  • You have in-house CNC grinding or wire-EDM capability
  • Your punch profiles are non-standard (custom shapes not in any catalog)
  • You consume >50 punches/month of the same base size (volume grinding is efficient)
  • You need to control the final heat treatment profile (blanks are supplied pre-hardened or annealed per your choice)

Buy Finished Punches Instead If:

  • Your profiles match standard JIS shapes (faster delivery, no grinding setup cost)
  • You lack in-house grinding capability (outsourcing grinding adds lead time and cost)
  • Quantity is less than 10 pieces (grinding setup cost per piece is too high)
  • Tolerance requirements are beyond your grinding machine capability

Cost Savings Analysis: In-House Grinding

Cost FactorCustom Finished Punch (Outsourced)Blank + In-House Grinding
Material CostIncluded in finished price$8-25 per blank (SKD11/SKH51)
Grinding CostIncluded (typically $20-60 per piece)$5-15 per piece (in-house, amortized machine time)
Total Cost per Piece$40-120 (custom finished)$13-40 (blank + in-house grinding)
Lead Time5-10 business days1-3 days (blank from stock + immediate grinding)
Minimum Quantity1 piece1 piece (but economics improve at 10+)
Cost SavingsBaseline50-65% savings at scale
Break-even analysis: In-house grinding from blanks becomes cost-effective at approximately 10 pieces per month of the same base size. Below that volume, the grinding setup time per piece makes finished punches more economical. Above 50 pieces/month, savings reach 50-65%.

About Punch Blanks

Punch blanks are semi-finished punch bodies supplied with precision-ground shanks but unfinished tips, ready for in-house custom grinding to any profile. Available in both pre-hardened (HRC 58-62, ready to grind) and annealed (for shops that want to machine before hardening) conditions. This 36-product range covers standard shank diameters from 3mm to 32mm in SKD11, SKH51, and SKH40 materials. Grinding allowance: 0.5-1.0mm on tip end.

Application Scenarios

🔧

Custom Profile Tooling Shops

Die-making shops with CNC grinding capability that produce custom punches for multiple clients need a flexible, cost-effective starting material.

Why punch blanks fit: Pre-hardened blanks eliminate the heat treatment step from the custom punch workflow. Shops only need to grind the profile - no hardening, tempering, or stress relieving required.

Recommended:SKD11 Punch Blank, pre-hardened HRC 58-62
🔬

Prototype Die Development

R&D teams developing new stamping processes need to iterate on punch geometry quickly without waiting for custom finished punch deliveries.

Why punch blanks fit: Stock blanks can be wire-EDM cut or ground to any profile within hours, enabling rapid design iteration. When the profile is finalized, production punches can be ordered as finished customs.

Recommended:SKH51 Punch Blank for rapid prototyping (annealed option for easier machining)

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the cost advantage of grinding punch blanks in-house?+
In-house grinding from blanks saves 50-65% per piece compared to outsourced custom finished punches at volumes above 50 pieces/month. Blank cost: $8-25. In-house grinding cost: $5-15 per piece (amortized). Total: $13-40 vs $40-120 for custom finished. Break-even point: approximately 10 pieces/month of the same base size.
Are punch blanks supplied fully hardened or annealed?+
Both options are available: Pre-hardened (HRC 58-62): Ready to grind immediately. No heat treatment required. Best for shops with CNC grinding or wire-EDM capability. Annealed (HRC 20-25): Soft enough for conventional machining (turning, milling). Requires subsequent heat treatment after machining. Best for complex 3D profiles that are difficult to grind from hardened material.
What grinding allowances are left on the tip of the blanks?+
Standard grinding allowance: 0.5-1.0mm on the tip end (radial and axial). The shank and head are finished to final dimensions - only the tip requires customer grinding. For blanks intended for wire-EDM cutting, the allowance can be specified at order time.
Can I order punch blanks in non-standard specialty alloys?+
Yes. In addition to standard SKD11/SKH51/SKH40, we can supply blanks in: HAP40 (high-vanadium PM steel, HRC 68-72), ASP2060 (cobalt-alloyed PM HSS), and Carbide (tungsten carbide, HRA 90+). Non-standard alloys: MOQ 5 pieces, lead time 10-15 business days.
