Threaded Shank Retention Mechanism
Tapped punches use a threaded shank that bolts through the punch plate from the backing plate side, providing positive mechanical retention that prevents pull-out during stripping. This is fundamentally different from the friction-based press-fit used by straight punches.
How Threaded Retention Works
The punch body has a tapped (internally threaded) bore at the shank end. A socket head cap screw (SHCS) passes through a clearance hole in the backing plate and threads into the punch shank. The screw preload clamps the punch head against the punch plate, creating a rigid mechanical connection. This eliminates the risk of punch pull-out that can occur with press-fit shanks when stripping forces exceed the interference fit holding force.
Torque Specifications
Recommended tightening torque follows standard bolt preload calculations: M6 screws: 8-10 Nm. M8 screws: 20-25 Nm. M10 screws: 35-45 Nm. Use thread-locking compound (Loctite 243 or equivalent medium-strength) to prevent loosening from die vibration. Re-torque after the first 10,000 hits to account for initial embedment relaxation.
When to Choose Threaded Over Press-Fit
Threaded retention is preferred when: (1) stripping force exceeds 30% of punch cross-section shear strength, (2) the punch must be quickly removable for frequent maintenance, (3) the punch plate material is softer than HRC 45 (reducing press-fit reliability), or (4) the die design requires the punch to be inserted from the face side (impossible with shoulder punches).
About Tapped Punches
Tapped punches provide threaded shank retention for applications requiring positive mechanical locking or rapid punch changeability. The internal thread accepts a socket head cap screw (SHCS) from the backing plate side, clamping the punch securely against the punch plate. This 9-product range covers standard metric thread sizes (M6, M8, M10) with SKD11 and SKH51 tool steel options. Available from both MISUMI (JIS standard) and DAYTON (inch equivalent).
Application Scenarios
Frequent Punch Replacement Lines
Production lines running multiple part numbers with different punch profiles require rapid changeover without disassembling the entire die.
Why tapped punches fit: Threaded retention allows individual punch removal from the backing plate side using a standard hex key, without removing the punch plate. Changeover time: 2-3 minutes per punch vs 15-20 minutes for press-fit removal.
High Stripping Force Operations
Deep piercing in thick materials (>2mm SPCC) generates stripping forces that can exceed the holding force of standard press-fit interference.
Why tapped punches fit: Bolt preload provides deterministic retention force independent of bore tolerance. A single M10 SHCS at 40 Nm provides approximately 25 kN of clamping force, far exceeding typical stripping loads.
