About Two-Step Core Pins
Two-step pins address cavity designs where a simple counterbore is insufficient — such as connector housings with a contact bore, alignment shoulder, and outer sealing recess. Three distinct diameters are concentric within a single pin body.
The additional step requires tighter process control during grinding. Concentricity across all three sections is maintained through centerless grinding on a single setup. Two-step pins are specified only when the part genuinely requires three internal diameters — for simpler geometries, one-step pins are more cost-effective.
Flat-sided variants provide rotational anti-rotation features, important when the stepped geometry must maintain a specific angular orientation relative to other mold features.
