Why Washer Selection Matters in Mold Assembly
Washers in injection molds serve two functions that standard hardware store washers cannot: distributing bolt clamping force across a controlled contact area (preventing plate surface damage) and managing heat transfer through bolt connections. The wrong washer leads to plate indentation, heat loss, or bolt head interference with moving components.
Unlike general-purpose washers, mold washers are precision-ground to specific thicknesses and surface finishes. They are manufactured from materials selected for their mechanical properties at elevated temperatures — not just their strength at room temperature.
Washer Profile Selection
The washer profile determines how the bolt head sits relative to the mold plate surface. Choose based on the application's clearance requirements:

Selection rule: Use flat washers as the default. Switch to countersunk only where bolt head protrusion interferes with mold function (parting line, moving plates, or clamping surfaces). Material Selection — S45C vs SUS416
The material choice is driven by the mold's operating temperature. The key difference is thermal conductivity — how much heat the washer conducts from the mold plate to the bolt and machine platen:

Sizing — OD, ID, and Thickness
- Inner diameter (ID): Must clear the bolt shank diameter with 0.5-1.0mm clearance. For an M12 bolt: washer ID = 13mm.

Installation Best Practices
- One washer per bolt: Do not stack multiple washers — stacked washers create a spring effect that reduces clamping force over time as the washers settle.
- Clean contact surfaces: Remove all oil, chips, and debris from both the washer face and the plate surface before assembly. Contamination under the washer creates uneven contact and localized stress.
- Match washer to bolt grade: For class 12.9 hex socket bolts, use hardened washers (HRC 20+). Soft washers under high-grade bolts will indent and deform, losing clamping force. Follow the torque specification guide for correct bolt torquing.
- Replace all washers simultaneously: When converting from S45C to SUS416 (or vice versa), replace all washers in the mold at once. Mixing materials creates asymmetric thermal conditions across the mold.
