Why Coatings Matter for Ball-Lock Punches
Ball-lock punches operate in demanding conditions: high compressive stress, abrasive work materials, and elevated temperatures from friction. Surface coatings applied via Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) add a thin (1-5 μm) but extremely hard layer that dramatically extends punch life by reducing wear and friction.
DAYTON offers 14 coating options for ball-lock punches. This guide focuses on the five most commonly specified coatings and provides a decision framework for selecting the right one.
Coating Comparison — Top 5 Options
| Coating | DAYTON Code | Hardness | Friction | Max Temp | Best Material | Life vs Uncoated |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| CRN (Chrome Nitride) | CRN | 1,750 HV | 0.3 | 700°C | General purpose | 3-4× |
| TiN (Titanium Nitride) | XN DayTride® | 2,300 HV | 0.4 | 600°C | Carbon steel | 3-5× |
| TiCN (Titanium Carbonitride) | XCD | 3,000 HV | 0.2 | 450°C | Stainless, AHSS | 5-7× |
| TiAlN (Titanium Aluminum Nitride) | XNA | 3,300 HV | 0.35 | 900°C | High-speed stamping | 5-8× |
| DLC (Diamond-Like Carbon) | XVP | 4,000+ HV | 0.1 | 350°C | Aluminum, copper | 8-10× |
Selection Decision Tree
- Step 1 — Material: What are you stamping? Non-ferrous (aluminum, copper) → DLC. Stainless steel → TiCN or TiAlN. Carbon steel → TiN or CRN.
- Step 2 — Speed: Running above 600 SPM? → TiAlN (best heat resistance). Below 400 SPM? → CRN is cost-effective.
- Step 3 — Volume: Above 1 million hits per setup? → Premium coating (TiCN, TiAlN, or DLC). Below 100K hits? → Uncoated or CRN.
- Step 4 — Budget: CRN is the baseline cost. TiN is ~20% more. TiCN/TiAlN is ~50% more. DLC is ~100% more.
Cost-Per-Hit Analysis
While premium coatings have higher upfront cost, the cost-per-hit often decreases because the punch lasts longer between replacements. A DLC-coated punch at 2× the price of uncoated but lasting 10× longer has a cost-per-hit that is 5× lower than uncoated.
Apply these coatings to all ball-lock punch types: ejector punches, regular punches, point larger punches, and pilot punches.
