What Cycle Counters Do
A mechanical mold cycle counter is a simple mechanical device mounted on the mold base that increments by one each time the mold closes. It provides an accurate, tamper-resistant record of the total number of shots (cycles) the mold has completed since installation or last reset.
This shot count is the foundation of condition-based preventive maintenance. Every mold component has a rated cycle life, and the counter tells you exactly where you are relative to those limits.

Types of Mold Cycle Counters
- Mechanical (digit wheel): Self-powered by mold closing motion. No batteries or wiring. Extremely reliable — operates in high-temperature, oily, vibrating environments without failure. Standard choice for 95% of applications.
- Electronic (digital display): Battery-powered with digital readout. Can include date/time stamps and multiple counter banks (total count + resettable PM count). More expensive and requires battery replacement.
- Integrated (machine controller): Built into the injection molding machine's control system. Tracks shot count per mold using mold ID. Requires mold identification setup and may not transfer data when molds move between machines.
Installation and Positioning
Install the counter on the mold base where it can be read without disassembling the mold:
- Location: Outside face of the movable half (operator side), near the parting line. The counter must be visible when the mold is installed in the machine.
- Mounting: Recessed into a pocket machined in the mold base. The counter face should be flush with or slightly below the mold surface to prevent damage during handling.
- Actuation: The counter plunger must contact the fixed half when the mold closes. Verify that the plunger travel matches the counter specification — too little travel and the counter does not increment; too much and the plunger is over-compressed.
