Three Standards, One Goal

DIN (German), JIS (Japanese), and NAAMS (North American Automotive) are the three dominant standards for fixture locating pins. Each evolved independently to serve regional manufacturing traditions, but all achieve the same functional goal: repeatable workpiece positioning within ±0.01 mm.

DIN Standards: The European Baseline

DIN 6325 (dowel pins) and DIN 7979 (pull-out dowel pins) are the most widely used European standards. Key characteristics:

  • DIN 6325: Solid cylindrical pins, m6 tolerance (interference fit). Used as permanent positioning elements in fixture plates.
  • DIN 7979: Same dimensions as DIN 6325 but with internal thread for extraction. Essential when pins must be removed for maintenance.
  • Mold base compatibility: Compatible with European fixture plate suppliers (Meusburger, HASCO, Erwin Halder)

JIS Standards: The Asian Baseline

JIS B 1352 (parallel pins) and JIS B 5062 (jig pins) serve the same function as their DIN counterparts with minor dimensional differences:

  • JIS B 1352: Equivalent to DIN 6325. Same m6/h6 tolerance options. Head style tends toward flat rather than crowned.
  • JIS B 5062: Fixture-specific pins with broader diameter and length options. Compatible with Japanese fixture plate suppliers.
  • Cross-compatibility: JIS and DIN pins are dimensionally interchangeable in most cases. Verify head style and length before substitution.

NAAMS Standards: Automotive-Specific

NAAMS (North American Automotive Metric Standards) pins are designed specifically for welding fixtures in automotive body-in-white assembly:

  • Unique hole patterns: NAAMS specifies exact hole patterns and mounting bolt layouts to ensure fixture interchangeability between suppliers
  • Anti-spatter requirement: All NAAMS pins must resist weld spatter — DLC, ceramic, or AlCrN coatings are standard
  • Tip geometry: Round tip (cylindrical) and diamond tip (slot) geometries replace the European/Japanese head style conventions

Can You Mix Standards?

Yes, with verification. DIN and JIS pins share the same ISO tolerance grades and can often be substituted directly. NAAMS pins require NAAMS-pattern fixture plates and cannot be installed in standard DIN/JIS bores without adapter bushings. Always verify dimensional compatibility before cross-standard substitution.
