How to Choose Cooling Circuit Plugs: Material, Seal Type & Temperature Rating
Standard Taper Plugs vs. O-Ring Sealed Plugs
Internal waterlines are drilled through mold plates, and the open ends must be plugged. Two distinct sealing technologies are used:
1. Brass Taper Plugs (Rc / NPT Threads)
These plugs feature a tapered thread that wedges into the matching internal thread, forming a metal-to-metal seal.
Performance: Simple and cost-effective, but susceptible to leaks during thermal cycling. Over-tightening can crack the mold base steel. They are limited to low-pressure water systems ($\le 0.8\text{ MPa}$).
2. High-Pressure Parallel Plugs (G / Metric Threads)
These plugs feature a straight thread and an elastomeric seal (O-ring) at the shoulder.
Performance: The O-ring handles the sealing, while the thread provides mechanical retention. Because the seal is elastic, it accommodates thermal expansion mismatch without leaking. They are rated up to **$2.0 \text{ to } 2.5\text{ MPa}$** and are the industry standard for heated water and oil systems.
Elastomer Temperature Ratings
For O-ring sealed plugs, the O-ring compound must match the operating temperature of the coolant. Standardizing on ISO sealing compound standards ensures reliability:
- Nitrile (NBR): Rated up to **$80^\circ\text{C}$**. Used in standard water systems.
- Fluorocarbon (FKM): Rated up to **$200^\circ\text{C}$**. Indispensable for high-temperature water and hot oil circuits.
- EPDM: Specifically for steam temperature control systems up to $150^\circ\text{C}$ (Do not use with oil).
Material Thermal Expansion Matching
To prevent structural loosening, the plug's coefficient of thermal expansion ($\alpha$) must match the mold base material. Mismatched materials contract at different rates during cooling, causing gaps to form:
