Standard Return Pins: When They're Enough
Standard return pins work by mechanical contact — the pin head touches the fixed mold half during close, pushing the ejector plate back. This is sufficient when all ejector pins are shorter than the mold close distance and no slide cores or lifters are present.
When You Need Early Return
Early return units are necessary when:
- Ejector pins extend beyond the parting line during ejection
- Angular lifters follow cam paths that extend laterally
- Slide cores could collide with extended ejector components
- The mold uses a two-stage ejection sequence
Cost Comparison
Return pins: $5-15 per pin. Early return units: $80-200 per unit (2-4 needed per mold). The cost difference is significant, but a single pin collision can cause $5,000-50,000 in cavity repair — making early return a worthwhile investment for collision-prone designs.
