About Tip-Processed Ejector Pins

Why factory tip processing? Mold shops traditionally grind pin tips in-house. Factory processing offers: (1) CNC precision not achievable by manual grinding; (2) consistent results across large pin sets; (3) documented tolerances for quality records. The cost premium over standard pins is typically 15-25%, which is less than the toolroom labor for manual grinding.

Z-Groove mechanics: The Z-groove creates a small air channel (0.02-0.05mm deep) at the pin-bore interface. During injection, trapped air between the resin front and the pin tip escapes through this groove to the vented side of the ejector plate. This is a lower-cost alternative to full gas release pins when the venting requirement is modest.

Application Scenarios

Cosmetic Surface Molding

Visible surfaces on consumer electronics, appliances, and automotive trim where pin marks must be invisible.

Why tip processing fits: Flat grind creates a flush ejection surface, eliminating the recessed ring mark caused by as-ground tip imperfections.

Recommended: Flat grind, M2 steel, h5 tolerance for Class A surfaces

Textured Surface Parts

Parts with VDI or SPI texture where ejector pin tips must match the surface profile to prevent drag marks during ejection.

Why tip processing fits: Radius tip matches the contour, preventing edge catch during ejection stroke. TiCN coating on the tip further reduces friction.

Recommended: Radius R1.0, TiCN coated tip, H13 for textured molds

Frequently Asked Questions

What tip shapes can be processed on straight ejector pins?+
Four standard tip processing types are available: (1) Flat grind — removes 0.05mm from the tip face for a perfectly flush ejection surface, eliminating the recessed ring mark common with as-ground tips. (2) Radius tip — R0.5 to R2.0 convex profile for contoured part surfaces, preventing edge-catch during ejection. (3) Chamfer — C0.2 to C0.5 at 45° for guided entry into tight bores, simplifying mold assembly. (4) Z-groove — cross-groove pattern (0.02–0.05mm deep) for gas venting at the pin-bore interface, reducing burn marks. Custom tip profiles are available via special order with 5–7 day lead time.
Can tip processing be applied to any material grade?+
Yes — tip processing is available for all three primary material grades: M2 (SKH51, HRC 60–62), H13 nitrided (SKD61, HV 900+ surface), and 440C stainless (HRC 56–58). The processing is performed after heat treatment, so the bulk hardness is maintained. For nitrided H13 pins, tip processing intentionally removes the nitrided layer at the tip face — this is by design, since the tip contacts the resin (not the bore wall), and the softer substrate provides better thermal fatigue resistance at the resin contact surface.
What is the lead time for tip-processed ejector pins?+
Standard tip shapes (flat grind, radius, chamfer) add 2–3 business days beyond the standard pin lead time. Z-groove processing requires 3–5 business days due to the CNC micro-machining involved. Custom tip profiles (non-standard angles, compound radii) take 5–7 business days and require a drawing submission. Rush processing is available for a premium surcharge, reducing turnaround to 1 business day for standard tip shapes. All tip-processed pins undergo 100% optical inspection for profile accuracy.
