Taperless Variant Comparison

Three taperless configurations available. Select based on your cavity geometry and venting requirements:

CriteriaOne-Step TaperlessTwo-Step TaperlessGas Release Taperless
Diameter Sections3 (two transitions)2 + venting
Retention MethodCylindrical interference fitCylindrical + vent flat
Best ForMulti-diameter with fast maintenanceDeep cavities needing venting + fast swap
Rule of thumb: Start with One-Step. Only upgrade to Two-Step when the part requires three internal diameters, or Gas Release when deep cavities cause burn marks.

Cost Advantage: Taperless vs Standard Taper

Taperless pins eliminate taper-reaming from plate machining. Quantified benefits on high-cavity molds:

15 minSaved per bore (no taper reaming)
16 hrsTotal savings on 64-cavity mold
100%Pin interchangeability (same-diameter swap)
When to choose taperless over standard: Prioritize taperless on any mold with 16+ core pins, or where maintenance frequency exceeds 4 replacements per year. The machining time savings and universal pin interchangeability compound rapidly.

Technical Overview

In conventional installations, the mold plate bore must be taper-reamed to match the pin's tapered shank — a time-consuming precision operation. Taperless core pins bypass this entirely by using a precision-ground cylindrical shank retained by interference fit in a straight bore.

This approach offers two practical advantages. First, plate machining is faster and simpler — standard drill and ream operations replace taper reaming. Second, pin replacement is more straightforward — any pin of the same shank diameter can be swapped in without verifying taper angle compatibility.

Taperless designs are particularly valued in high-cavity molds where dozens of core pins must be installed and periodically replaced. The time savings compound across every bore in the mold.

Frequently Asked Questions

Advantages of taperless?+
Eliminates taper-reaming, reduces machining time, simplifies pin replacement. Trade-off: requires tighter bore tolerances for proper retention.
Suitable for high-cycle production?+
Yes. Widely used in 1M+ cycle molds. Periodic bore inspection during maintenance ensures consistent retention.
Best vent type for taperless?+
Flat-sided SVC venting is standard. The flat simultaneously provides anti-rotation and gas evacuation.
