Correct matching of ball-lock retainers with punches requires alignment on three critical dimensions:
- Bore diameter: Must exactly match the punch shank diameter
- Load rating: Must match (Light with Light, Heavy with Heavy)
- Measurement system: Must match (inch with inch, metric with metric)

Common Matching Mistakes
- Wrong measurement system: A 12.7mm (1/2") punch will not fit a 12.0mm metric retainer despite similar dimensions. Always verify the exact specification.
- Mismatched load rating: A Light Duty punch in a Heavy Duty retainer may bind. A Heavy Duty punch in a Light Duty retainer may have insufficient retention force.
- Worn retainer bore: If the retainer bore is worn beyond +0.02mm, the punch will have excessive play. Use EZ Fit inserts to restore the bore or replace the retainer.

DAYTON (inch-primary) and MISUMI (metric-primary) are the two major ball-lock system suppliers. Their dimensional standards are cross-compatible for standard sizes. When cross-referencing, verify:
- Shank diameter matches exactly (not approximately)
- Teardrop groove position matches (distance from shank end)
- Ball diameter and spring force are compatible
