Modular Fixture Fundamentals
Modular fixture systems use standardized grid plates with pre-machined mounting holes at regular intervals (typically 50 mm or 2 inch grid). Components mount anywhere on the grid, enabling rapid fixture reconfiguration without custom plate machining. Support blocks integrate into this system as height-providing elements.

Height Standardization Strategy
Instead of custom-height blocks for each part number, standardize in 5 mm increments:
- Base heights: 20, 25, 30, 35, 40 mm
- Shim stock: 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, 3.0 mm precision shims for fine adjustment
- Total range: 20-43 mm in 0.5 mm increments using only 5 block heights + 4 shim thicknesses
This 9-part inventory covers what would otherwise require 47 unique block heights.
Grid Plate Selection
For support block integration, the grid plate must provide:
- Flatness: ≤0.01 mm/100 mm. The plate surface is the height reference — any plate unflatness directly adds to support height error.
- Hardness: ≥45 HRC at mounting holes. Soft plates deform around bolt heads under clamping force.
- Grid accuracy: Hole positions within ±0.01 mm of nominal. Position errors compound when multiple supports reference the same grid.
Best Practices
- Locate supports beneath the cutting zone: Not at the workpiece edges. Support where the cutting force is applied.
- Use at least 3 support points: Three non-collinear supports define a stable plane. Four or more supports require precision shimming to avoid rocking.
- Torque mounting bolts consistently: Uneven torque tilts the support block, introducing height error. Use a torque wrench.
- Document support positions: Record grid coordinates and shim stack-up for each part number. This enables rapid changeover by following the setup sheet.
