Three Materials, Three Trade-Offs
Locating pin material determines service life, positioning accuracy over time, and environmental compatibility. The wrong choice leads to premature wear, rust-induced seizure, or unnecessary cost. This guide compares the three standard materials used in precision fixture locating pins.
Material Properties Comparison
| Property | SKD11 (D2 equivalent) | SUJ2 (52100 equivalent) | SUS304 (304 SS) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hardness | 58-62 HRC | 58-62 HRC | ~187 HB (~89 HRB) |
| Wear Resistance | Excellent — 12% Cr carbide network | Very good — fine carbide distribution | Poor — austenitic, no carbides |
| Corrosion Resistance | Low — will rust in coolant | Low — will rust in coolant | Excellent — 18% Cr + 8% Ni |
| Dimensional Stability | Excellent after tempering | Good — slight retained austenite risk | Excellent — no phase transformation |
| Machinability | Difficult (high Cr carbides) | Moderate | Good (but gummy) |
| Relative Cost | 1.3× | 1.0× (baseline) | 1.5× |
When to Use SKD11
SKD11 (equivalent to AISI D2) is a high-chromium, high-carbon cold work tool steel. Its 12% chromium content forms a dense network of Cr₇C₃ carbides that provide exceptional abrasion resistance.
- Best for: Fixtures cycling >10,000 parts where wear-induced positional drift is the primary failure mode
- Typical applications: Permanent CNC fixture datum pins, high-volume assembly jigs, automotive stamping fixtures
- Heat treatment: Vacuum hardened to 58-62 HRC, triple tempered at 180-200°C for maximum dimensional stability
- Limitation: Will rust in water-based coolant. Apply rust preventive oil after each shift, or switch to SUS304 in wet environments.
When to Use SUJ2
SUJ2 (equivalent to AISI 52100 / 100Cr6) is a bearing steel with finely distributed chromium carbides. It achieves the same hardness as SKD11 at lower cost, making it the most widely used locating pin material globally.
- Best for: General-purpose fixtures with moderate cycle counts (1,000-50,000 parts)
- Typical applications: Standard locating pins, guide pins, inspection gauge datum pins
- Advantage over SKD11: 20-30% lower cost per pin with comparable hardness
- Limitation: Slightly lower abrasion resistance than SKD11 in high-cycle applications. Retained austenite can cause minor dimensional changes over time if not properly tempered.
When to Use SUS304
SUS304 (equivalent to AISI 304) is an austenitic stainless steel. It provides excellent corrosion resistance but at dramatically lower hardness — roughly 3× softer than SKD11 or SUJ2.
- Best for: Fixtures operating in wet, humid, or chemically aggressive environments where rust would compromise positioning accuracy
- Typical applications: Food processing equipment fixtures, medical device assembly, marine environment gauges
- Critical trade-off: Accept shorter pin life (replace more frequently) in exchange for zero corrosion risk. In corrosive environments, a rusted SKD11 pin is worse than a worn SUS304 pin.
Decision Rule
For dry-environment fixtures cycling >10,000 parts, use SKD11. For general-purpose fixtures, use SUJ2 (best value). For wet or corrosive environments, accept the hardness trade-off and use SUS304 with a shorter replacement interval.
