The Sizing Formula

Required pillar load = Clamping force × 1.2 (safety factor)

Number of pillars = Required load / Load per pillar

Load Capacity Reference

Pillar ØLoad (kN)
Ø2025 kN
Ø3050 kN
Ø4080 kN
Ø50120 kN

Example Calculation

Mold: 400×400 mm, 300-ton clamping press.

Required load: 300 tons × 9.81 × 1.2 = 3,530 kN.

Using Ø40 pillars (80 kN each): 3,530 / 80 = 45 pillars... this seems wrong.

Important clarification: Support pillars don't carry the full clamping force — they carry only the portion transmitted through the ejector space. The majority of clamping force is transmitted directly through the mold plates. Typically, pillars need to support 5-15% of total clamping force.

Revised: 3,530 × 0.10 = 353 kN. Using Ø40: 353/80 = 5 pillars ✓
