Product Selection Guide
Products differ by dimensional standard and tolerance grade. Match to your mold plate origin:
| Variant | Description | Best For | Recommendation |
|---|---|---|---|
| JIS Standard | Head T=4 mm, Asian diameter series, taper-fit shank | Molds built in Japan, China, Korea, Taiwan | Verify plate pocket matches JIS spec |
| DIN Standard | Head T=5 mm, European diameter series, different taper angle | Molds built in Germany or to European tooling standards | Not interchangeable with JIS |
| Standard Tolerance | Shaft OD per JIS/DIN default (±0.01 mm typical) | General-purpose applications with standard bore clearance | Default — most applications |
| Extra-Precision | Shaft OD tightened to +0/−0.005 mm | Minimal-clearance bores, thin-wall molding requiring concentricity | Premium — tight-fit only |
Is No-Tip Processing Right for You?
Standard (no-tip) core pins are the right choice when the molded feature meets these conditions:
✅ No-Tip is correct if:
- The internal feature is not visible to the end user (screw bosses, alignment holes, cable channels)
- Surface finish requirement is Ra > 0.4 μm (standard ground finish is sufficient)
- No date code, cavity number, or other marking is needed on the molded feature
🔄 Consider switching to:
- Molded feature is visible to end user? → Tip-Processed Core Pins
- Need a date code or cavity number on the part? → Engraved Core Pins
- Deep blind cavity with burn marks? → Gas Release Core Pins
- Tip wear is your primary maintenance cost? → Inlay Core Pins (replaceable tip)

About No-Tip Straight Core Pins
Not every molded hole requires a mirror-finish cavity surface. Screw boss holes, cable routing channels, and alignment bores are hidden inside the assembled product — for these features, a standard no-tip core pin delivers the required dimensional accuracy at the lowest cost per pin.
The shaft is precision-ground to JIS or DIN tolerances with a standardized head thickness of T = 4 mm. Material options range from SKH51 (M2) for high-cycle general-purpose molds, through SKD61 (H13) for elevated-temperature applications, to STAVAX ESR for medical and optical molds requiring corrosion resistance.
No-tip pins are the recommended starting point for most new mold designs. If testing reveals that the molded feature requires a better surface finish, upgrading to a tip-processed variant is straightforward — the shaft dimensions and head are identical.
Application Scenarios
No-tip straight core pins are the standard choice across a wide range of injection molding applications. Here are the most common scenarios where they deliver optimal performance:
Screw Boss & Fastener Holes
Pain point: High-volume consumer electronics and automotive interior molds require dozens of screw boss holes per part — each one adding tool cost if over-specified with tip processing.
Why no-tip fits: Screw boss holes are purely functional — hidden inside the assembled product and threaded by self-tapping screws that erase any surface marks. Standard ground finish (Ra ~0.8 µm) is more than sufficient, cutting per-pin cost by 20-30% versus tip-processed variants.
Medical Device Internal Channels
Pain point: Medical device housings require internal fluid routing channels that must resist corrosion from autoclave sterilization cycles — but the channels are internal and never patient-facing.
Why no-tip fits: STAVAX ESR material provides the corrosion resistance needed to survive aggressive resin chemistries (PPS, PEEK) without tip processing cost. The internal channel geometry does not require cosmetic surface quality.
Alignment & Through-Holes in Connectors
Pain point: Multi-cavity connector molds need tight positional accuracy across 16-64 cavities — but the alignment holes themselves are concealed inside the connector body after assembly.
Why no-tip fits: Extra-Precision tolerance (+0/−0.005 mm) ensures concentricity across all cavities. Since the holes are non-cosmetic, no tip processing is needed — saving cycle time on large cavity counts.
