Two Tip Geometries, Two Alignment Strategies
Ball-lock pilot punches are available in two tip geometries, each optimized for different production requirements:
- Round tip: A flat cylindrical end that enters the pilot hole with minimal clearance (0.005-0.015mm per side). Maximum precision, requires tight pilot holes.
- Tapered tip: A conical nose (5-10° per side) that self-centers the strip even with loose pilot holes. Compensates for feed variation.

Selection Decision Guide
- Choose round tip when: Part tolerance is ±0.02mm or tighter, press speed is below 400 SPM, and your feeder provides consistent positioning (±0.01mm).
- Choose tapered tip when: Press speed exceeds 500 SPM, feed variation is expected (coil-fed lines), pilot holes may enlarge over die life, or part tolerance allows ±0.05mm positioning.
- Use both in the same die: Round tip at the first station (for initial precision alignment), tapered tip at downstream stations (for speed-tolerant centering).
Coating Recommendations for Pilot Tips
Pilot tip coating is especially important because the tip-to-hole contact cycle repeats millions of times. Recommended coatings by tip type:
- Round tip: DLC (lowest friction, minimizes pilot hole enlargement) or TiAlN (best for high-speed heat)
- Tapered tip: TiCN (best wear resistance for the high-contact taper nose) or CRN (cost-effective for moderate speed)
