Two Clamping Philosophies

Conventional step clamps are commodity hardware — stamped or cast from mild steel, sold in sets, and replaced frequently. European standard clamping blocks (Z1-Z7 series) are precision-engineered components designed for repeatable, high-force clamping in demanding CNC applications.

Why Material Grade Matters

The clamping block contacts the workpiece under high compressive force (5-20 kN). Material hardness determines how the contact surface behaves under cyclic loading:

  • C45 (~200 HB): Resists surface indentation under repeated clamping cycles. The contact surface maintains its flatness over years of use.
  • Mild steel (~120 HB): Deforms progressively under cyclic loading. After 1,000-2,000 clamping cycles, the contact surface develops indentations that cause uneven force distribution.

Why Precision Grinding Matters

Ground contact surfaces (≤Ra 1.6 µm) provide full-face contact between the block and workpiece. Unground surfaces have high spots that concentrate force, causing:

  • Uneven clamping force distribution → workpiece rocking
  • Surface marking on finished workpieces
  • Reduced effective clamping force (only 30-50% of the surface is in contact)

Purpose-Built Fasteners

The Z6 eccentric bolt and Z7 high-alloy bolt are purpose-built clamping fasteners — not off-the-shelf bolts with washers. This eliminates two common failure modes in conventional step clamps:

  • Bolt stretching: Standard bolts stretch under repeated tightening, reducing clamping force over time. Z7 tool steel bolts (52 HRC) resist stretching.
  • Washer deformation: Standard washers deform under cyclic loading, reducing clamping force. European blocks use integral bearing surfaces — no washers needed.
