The T-Slot System

European standard clamping blocks mount to fixture plates through T-slot channels defined by DIN 650. The T-slot bolt head slides into the channel from the end, and the block sits on top. Tightening the bolt clamps the block against the workpiece. Getting the right bolt-to-slot match is essential for maximum clamping force.

Bolt Selection Rules

  • Head-to-slot clearance: The bolt head must be 1-2 mm narrower than the T-slot width to allow sliding insertion. Too tight → difficult insertion. Too loose → bolt tilts under load.
  • Thread length: Bolt length must accommodate block height + workpiece thickness + nut height + 5 mm clearance. Standard bolt lengths: 40, 50, 60, 80, 100 mm.
  • Grade: Use Grade 8.8 or 10.9 T-slot bolts. Standard Grade 4.8 bolts will stretch under repeated clamping cycles.

Common Mistakes

  • Wrong bolt grade: Using Grade 4.8 bolts in a high-force application. The bolt stretches under cyclic loading, gradually reducing clamping force without visible warning.
  • Missing step blocks: When the clamping block is thinner than the workpiece, a step block (spacer) must be placed under the block's free end to keep it level. Angled clamping blocks direct force sideways instead of downward.
  • No retorque schedule: All bolted joints loosen under vibration. Retorque T-slot bolts after the first 50 clamping cycles, then every 500 cycles thereafter.
