Gas Venting vs. Date Marking Inserts: Key Differences Explained
Two Insert Types, Two Different Problems
Injection molds need inserts for two unrelated reasons: removing trapped gas and stamping traceability codes. Confusing these two functions wastes engineering time and leads to incorrect specifications.
Gas venting inserts solve a process defect problem — burn marks, short shots, and trapped air. Date marking inserts solve a traceability problem — recording when a part was molded for quality audits and recall management.
Gas Venting Inserts: Function and Types
Gas venting inserts allow trapped air and volatile gases to escape from the mold cavity during injection. They use one of three technologies:
- Round vent inserts — machined channels in a cylindrical insert body. Good general-purpose venting.
- Slit vent inserts — narrow slit geometry for thin-wall areas where round vents would flash.
- Porous sintered metal inserts — interconnected micro-pores (7–20 μm) for cosmetic surfaces and blind pockets. See sintering technology overview.

Date Marking Inserts: Function and Types
Date marking inserts stamp a date code (year, month, or week) onto the molded part surface. The mark is updated periodically by rotating a ring or exchanging a pin. Types include:
- PL-side exchange pins — swapped from the parting line without disassembling the mold.
- Plate-side exchange pins — accessed from the ejector plate side for more secure retention.
- Double-ring inserts — year and month encoded on two concentric rotating rings.
Date marking is required by traceability standards in automotive (ISO 16949 / IATF 16949) and medical device manufacturing.

Specifying Both in the Same Mold
Most production molds require both insert types. The specification sequence matters:
- Step 1: Run mold flow simulation to identify gas trap locations.
- Step 2: Specify gas venting inserts at each identified trap point.
- Step 3: Select a date mark insert location on a non-cosmetic flat surface.
- Step 4: Verify that neither insert interferes with the other's pocket or cooling channels.
