Pre-Installation Checklist
- Verify punch plate bore diameter matches retainer OD specification (H7/m6 fit)
- Clean the punch plate bore with compressed air — remove all chips and debris
- Inspect retainer for shipping damage — check ball mechanism operation before installing
- Verify retainer depth dimension matches punch plate thickness
Installation Procedure
- Step 1: Align the retainer with the punch plate bore. Ensure the retainer is perfectly perpendicular to the plate surface.
- Step 2: Using an arbor press, apply steady downward force. The retainer should press in smoothly — if it binds, stop and check alignment.
- Step 3: Press until the retainer flange is flush with the punch plate surface. Do not press past flush.
- Step 4: Verify ball mechanism operation by inserting a test punch — quarter-turn should lock smoothly with a positive click.
Lubrication Schedule

Inspection Protocol
- Weekly: Operate each ball-lock mechanism — quarter-turn should feel smooth with positive engagement. Flag any retainers with increased resistance or no click.
- Monthly: Measure retainer bore diameter with a plug gauge. Flag any bore exceeding +0.02mm from nominal.
- Quarterly: Remove a sample punch from each retainer and inspect the teardrop groove for ball wear marks. Excessive marks indicate ball replacement needed.
