Understanding Safe Working Load (SWL)
Safe Working Load (SWL), also called Working Load Limit (WLL), is the maximum load that lifting hardware can support under normal service conditions. It is not the breaking strength — it includes a safety factor that accounts for dynamic loads, material fatigue, and environmental degradation over time.
The EN 1677 standard specifies a minimum 4:1 safety factor for forged steel lifting components. This means an eye bolt with 8,000 kg breaking strength has a SWL of 2,000 kg. The safety factor accounts for shock loads during crane acceleration/deceleration and cumulative material degradation.
Step-by-Step SWL Calculation
Follow this process for every mold lift:
- Step 1 — Determine mold weight: Use the mold design drawing weight specification or weigh the mold on a crane scale. Never estimate — a 20% underestimate of mold weight can put lifting hardware beyond its safe limit.
- Step 2 — Determine number of lifting points: Most molds use 2 lifting points (one on each side). Large molds (>2,000 kg) may use 4 points with a spreader beam.
- Step 3 — Calculate per-point load: Per-point load = Mold weight / Number of lifting points. For a 1,500 kg mold with 2 points: 1,500 / 2 = 750 kg per point.
- Step 4 — Apply sling angle factor: If slings are not vertical (they rarely are), multiply by the angle factor.
- Step 5 — Select eye bolt: Choose an SLEB swivel eye bolt with SWL ≥ the calculated per-point load including the angle factor.

Worked Example
A three-plate injection mold weighs 2,500 kg. The crane uses two slings at 45° angle:
- Per-point load: 2,500 / 2 = 1,250 kg
- With 45° angle factor: 1,250 × 1.41 = 1,763 kg per eye bolt
- Required SWL: ≥ 1,763 kg → Select SLEB M20 (SWL 2,000 kg)
- Verification: Eye bolt SWL (2,000 kg) > Required (1,763 kg) ✓
- Plus lifting bar: Three-plate mold requires a lifting bar to lock all plates together during transport.

Rule: Never use fixed eye bolts for mold lifting. In practice, sling angles of 15-45° are unavoidable, and fixed eye bolts are not rated for any angular load. The cost difference ($30-50 per bolt) is trivial compared to the risk. For rigging safety standards, refer to OSHA 1910.184.
