The Three Pillars of Workholding
Every precision fixture relies on three functional categories of components, always applied in this order: locate, clamp, support. Skipping or reversing this sequence is the most common root cause of fixture-related quality failures.
- Locating — Pins and bushings establish the workpiece datum reference. Without accurate location, clamping force is meaningless because the part is in the wrong position.
- Clamping — Blocks and clamps apply holding force to keep the workpiece against the locators during machining. Force direction must push the part toward the locators, not away.
- Supporting — Blocks and pads prevent workpiece deflection under cutting forces. They do not contribute to positioning — they only resist deformation.
Step 1 — Define Your Locating Strategy
The classic 3-2-1 locating principle uses six contact points to constrain all six degrees of freedom. In practice, most CNC fixtures use a simplified 2-pin locating system:
- Primary locator: One cylindrical pin constrains X and Y translation (2 DOF)
- Secondary locator: One diamond pin constrains rotation around Z (1 DOF), while allowing thermal expansion along the pin-to-pin axis
- Datum surface: The fixture plate face constrains Z translation (1 DOF)
Select pin diameter based on workpiece hole size. Standard range is Ø6–Ø25 mm. For press-fit permanent pins, specify m6 tolerance. For removable pins, use g6 clearance fit.
Step 2 — Select Clamping Components
Clamping force must be sufficient to resist cutting forces without deforming the workpiece. The key selection criteria are:

Step 3 — Add Support Elements
Support blocks prevent workpiece deflection under cutting forces. Place them directly beneath the cutting zone, not at the workpiece edges. Key selection factors:
- Fixed-height applications: Hardened tool steel support blocks (58 HRC) — best for permanent fixtures with known workpiece datums
- Variable-height applications: Height adjusting pins with threaded adjustment — best for fixtures handling multiple part variants
- High-precision applications: Ground contact surfaces (≤Ra 0.8 μm) — mandatory for inspection fixtures

For most dry-environment CNC fixtures, SKD11 locating pins paired with C45 clamping blocks provide the optimal balance of wear resistance and cost.
