Integrated Hydro-Circuit Blocks
A hydro-circuit block (often called a water distribution block) is a thick steel or aluminum plate bolted directly to the mold backplate. Channels are cross-drilled inside the block to route water to the respective core insert waterlines.
Connection Method: Dynamic flush-face couplings or static face O-ring seals connect the block directly to the mold. Instead of hooking up a dozen hoses, the operator connects one main supply line.
Ideal For: High-cavitation molds, cleanroom medical molding (where external hoses trap dust), and high-frequency mold change setups.
External Water Manifolds
A waterline manifold is an extruded aluminum, brass, or stainless steel bar with one large main inlet port and multiple smaller branch ports (usually containing quick-disconnect couplers). It is mounted on the mold plates or the molding machine platen.
Connection Method: Individual reinforced rubber or braided stainless steel hoses run from each mold waterline outlet to the manifold ports.
Ideal For: Low-to-medium volume production, prototype tooling, and multi-zone cooling layouts requiring manual flow adjustment on each separate loop.
Engineering Sizing and Capacity Guidelines
To prevent hydraulic flow restriction, the main inlet port diameter ($D_{main}$) of the manifold or block must match the combined cross-sectional area of the active branch channels ($d_{branch}$): $$D_{main} \ge \sqrt{\sum d_{branch}^2}$$ For a 6-port manifold feeding ø8 mm waterlines, the main supply line diameter must be: $$D_{main} \ge \sqrt{6 \cdot 8^2} \approx 19.6\text{ mm}$$ Sizing the supply port below this value creates a hydraulic bottleneck, causing pressure drops and reducing flow velocities below the turbulent limit.
