When You Need Tooling Accessories

You need tooling accessories when you are building or maintaining equipment that holds a workpiece during a manufacturing operation:

  • CNC machining fixtures — Locating pins position the workpiece; clamping blocks hold it; support blocks prevent deflection under cutting forces
  • Welding jigs — Anti-spatter coated locating pins position sheet metal parts; toggle clamps hold them during robotic welding
  • Inspection gauges — Precision locating pins and hardened support blocks create repeatable measurement references
  • Assembly stations — Drill bushings guide tools; height adjusting pins accommodate part variation

When You Need Mold Standard Parts

You need mold standard parts when you are building or maintaining an injection mold, die-casting mold, or similar closed-die tooling:

  • Core pins — Form internal features (holes, bosses) in the molded part
  • Ejector pins — Push the solidified part out of the mold cavity
  • Guide bushings — Align mold halves during closing (different from fixture bushings)
  • Sprue bushings — Channel molten plastic from the nozzle into the runner system

The Gray Area: Mold Fixtures

Some applications blur the boundary. When you mount a mold onto an injection molding machine, you use toggle clamp systems — which are tooling accessories, not mold parts. The mold itself contains mold standard parts, but the clamping system that holds it to the machine platen is a tooling accessory.

Similarly, electrode fixtures for EDM (Electrical Discharge Machining) use locating pins and clamping blocks to position the electrode — these are tooling accessories even though they serve the mold-making process.
